I have been a family law solicitor since 1996 and set up Nicola Williams & Co in Cheadle, Greater Manchester 2001.
I am now based in Didsbury.
For many years I covered a broad spectrum of contested family law work but in recent years I have moved away from the adversarial nature of court based work and now focus almost entirely on:
- advising clients through the mediation process, for those who are experiencing separation and divorce;
- helping clients experiencing divorce and separation to record their agreements in a legally binding way. For example, by applying for a consent order on decree nisi of divorce, or drawing up a separation agreement;
- cohabitation agreements or creation of trusts over property for those clients who are moving in together or buying property with a friend or family member.
Most agreements I draft are related to the division of their assets on separation or divorce. Others may, for example, create a record of ownership of a property when the legal title at the land registry does not show the whole picture – perhaps if a property is owned by cohabitants in unequal shares or where a parent has made a direct contribution to a deposit.
